The Comfort–Threat Loop
Why change drains some managers and energises others

Module Companion — EI-Unleashed in Action

How to use this Insight

This Insight explains why change can feel exhausting even when you are capable and experienced.

It is not a resilience problem. It is a threat response.

The Core Pattern

Change does not create stress.

Stress is created by the meaning the change is given.

That meaning shapes:

  • emotional state

  • behaviour

  • performance

The Loop

Change → Meaning → Emotional State → Behaviour → Outcome

Two Ways This Shows Up

Engagement Mode

  • Change feels like opportunity

  • Energy increases

  • Adaptability feels natural

Threat Mode

  • Change feels like loss or risk

  • Thinking narrows

  • Emotional drain increases

Why Advice Often Fails

Most advice assumes people are choosing how they react.

In reality, the nervous system has already decided whether something feels safe or threatening.

This is not a mindset issue.

It is a state issue.

A Better Question

Instead of asking:

“Why can’t I handle this?”

Ask:

“What does this situation threaten for me?”

Common answers include:

  • competence

  • certainty

  • control

  • identity

Pause & Reflect

  1. Where does this pattern show up most for me?

  2. What do I feel I might lose in those moments?

  3. How do I usually respond under that pressure?

  4. What would change if I reduced the threat first?

Closing Thought

You are not failing.
You are responding exactly as a human system does under pressure.
Understanding the pattern is the first interruption.
